Bartley Sawatsky

“I’m passionate about church-planting and pastoring. I desire to see the gospel spread and for those who come to Christ to be strong in their faith and faithful to the Word of God.”

  • Location: Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada

  • Summary of Ministry: Bartley served in a French church in Trois-Rivières, Québec, for 3 years before joining the Charis Fellowship in 1996. He started Grace Community Church in the Greater Toronto Area in 1998 (now Renew Church), where he continues to serve. He served as the Executive Director of the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches in the U.S. (Charis Fellowship) from 2014–2016 and was privileged to be part of the Charis Gathering in 2015 in Bangkok when the Alliance was officially born.

  • Bio: Bartley was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. At age 12, his family joined with a pastor and his wife to plant a church in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, which is how church planting got into his blood. He played AAA Midget hockey before graduating high school and going on to Bible college and seminary. He received his Masters of Divinity degree from Capital Bible Seminary in Washington, D.C., graduating magna cum laude.  It was there that he first connected with the Grace Brethren Fellowship (now Charis Fellowship).  He has served on various church-planting boards in the U.S. and Canada (including Grace Fellowship Canada) and has a keen interest in starting new churches that will reintroduce Christian faith to people in a post-Christian culture. He has pastored the same church for 27 years. Bartley has been married to his wife Sarah for 32 years. They have four children, 3 grandchildren and more on the way.

  • Why I Believe in the Charis Alliance: “I believe God’s Spirit has a history of working through groups of like-minded people. In an ever-increasingly global environment, our international fraternity has the opportunity to grow in strength and number as our different regions learn from one another and collaborate together. ”
