How We Got Started: Trinidad & Tobago
The Birth of a Movement in Trinidad
The Charis Alliance church-planting movement in Trinidad began with a young man named Ancil Ragoonath. He actually left Trinidad to pursue theological education in the United States at Capital Bible Seminary. In partnership with Grace Brethren North American Missions, he attempted to plant a church in Miami, Florida. But during this time, Ancil felt a deeper calling to return to Trinidad to establish a gospel-centered movement there.
In 2000, Ancil and Dr. Chuck Davis led the first “GO2Trinidad” missions team to lay the foundation for church planting. These teams engaged in hands-on ministry, assisting in churches, orphanages, schools, and hospitals while sharing the gospel. Over the next few years, multiple mission teams continued to serve in Trinidad, preparing the ground for a lasting movement.
In 2004, Ancil officially returned to Trinidad to plant a church that would serve as a hub for future church plants. Trin-Grace Ministries was then formed to act on this vision, and on July 24, 2005, the church was launched. However, due to personal safety concerns, Ancil was forced to leave the country later that year, placing the future of the movement in jeopardy.
The Growth of the Movement in Trinidad
Despite this setback, God remained faithful. Dr. Chuck Davis traveled to Trinidad to meet with the core group of believers, who were determined to continue the mission. The group continued gathering for worship and prayer, led by Roger and Kumarie Dabideen. In 2006, a new church was launched—Grace Church, later renamed Cornerstone of Grace Fellowship—with Roger serving as pastor.
Under Pastor Roger’s leadership, the church flourished. Ministries for children, youth, men, and women were established, and outreach efforts expanded. A hospital visitation ministry and food distribution programs met both physical and spiritual needs. As people were saved and baptized, the church grew stronger in its mission.
For years, Grace Church met in a rented facility, but in 2015, they broke ground on their own church building. By 2016, the congregation moved into their new home, and the building was officially dedicated in 2017. Today, Cornerstone of Grace Fellowship remains a thriving church, continuing the work that God started decades ago.
A Call to Prayer and Support
The movement in Trinidad has seen progress, but there are still challenges to overcome. We invite you to pray for the following key areas:
Strengthening the Charis Alliance in Trinidad: Several churches are considering joining the Charis Alliance but remain hesitant. Pray for God’s guidance as they navigate this decision.
Safety in Ministry: Increasing crime and gang activity in some areas have made outreach more difficult. Pray for God to protect the churches and their ministries.
Raising Up Leaders: There is a great need for men to step into leadership roles, particularly in preaching and teaching. Pray that God would raise up and equip faithful leaders to serve His Church.
Expanding Ministry and Training: As Cornerstone of Grace Fellowship continues to grow, there is an urgent need for better training programs, especially for children’s and youth ministries. Pray for wisdom and resources to develop these crucial ministries.
God has done amazing things in Trinidad, and the future is bright. With continued prayer, support, and faithful leadership, the Charis movement in Trinidad is well-positioned to expand its influence and bring the gospel to even more people. May God continue to bless His Church in Trinidad and beyond!
