How We Got Started: Uruguay

The Birth of the Movement in Uruguay

In 1987, the Charis Alliance—then known as the Grace Brethren Church—planted its first church in Uruguay through the faithful efforts of José and Hilda Palacios. The Palacios were a retired couple from Buenos Aires who dedicated their golden years to God’s work. The church’s first gathering was held in the Shangrila resort, just outside the capital city of Montevideo. What began as an effort to evangelize vacationing couples quickly blossomed into a committed group of believers.

The church in Buenos Aires recognized what God was doing through the Palacios, so they provided a house for them to live in and host weekly gatherings. God opened many doors  and the group grew rapidly. The people in the neighborhood often came to them for prayer, advice, and company, because they enjoyed this lovely retired couple whose love for the locals compelled them to live in their country. Despite facing challenges like financial difficulties and José’s fragile health, their work laid the foundation for the Charis church in Uruguay.

The Growth of the Movement in Uruguay

By the time José was unable to continue in Uruguay due to his health, the Lord had already raised up the married couple of Daniel and Gabriela Barbitta to lead and pastor the church. Daniel became pastor in 1991, and under their guidance, the ministry flourished.

In 1990, the first point of light was started in Montevideo, and in 1994, they built their sanctuary and became an established church. This building project was overseen by the Charis Alliance, and received the support of missionary Dave Guiles and his team from the USA. Over the following years, the church expanded its infrastructure and ministries. By 2000, the church was helping in the support of missionaries to neighboring countries like Brazil, Chile, and Paraguay.

Pastor Daniel Barbitta went home to be with Jesus in 2018, but the Church of Hope in Montevideo remains a stable and vibrant congregation. Today, it boasts ministries for children, youth, couples, and prayer, as well as small group meetings across the region.

A Call to Prayer and Support

As the Charis Alliance in Uruguay celebrates over three decades of ministry, it faces exciting opportunities and challenges.

  • With two beautiful buildings and a strong foundation, ask God to expand its reach to new locations and continue using it to make disciples.

  • Please pray for wisdom as the church seeks to remain faithful to the gospel and to embrace innovative ways to share the good news.

Thanks for supporting the church’s ongoing efforts as they shine Christ’s light in Uruguay and beyond. Together, we stand with the Church of Hope in Uruguay, proclaiming the gospel “until He comes.”
