Meet the Family: Monica Serpez (Argentina)
Recently, my daughter sat across from me, her face overhwhelmed with exhaustion and worry. Sadly, in our country, a good job and a university degree don't guarantee a dignified wage. Watching her, I recognized my younger self—the same feelings of uncertainty and distress I had when our kids were small and the struggle to get ahead was a daily challenge.
But the advantage of being 67 is the gift of perspective. I can look back and clearly see how God has faithfully woven Himself into every situation, often without me realizing it at the time. An old hymn reminds us that "All promises of the Lord Jesus, are mighty support for my faith"—a truth that holds true for every generation.
This perspective reminded me of one of the most beautiful and encouraging promises in Scripture: Isaiah 40:28–31.
"Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. "
We all have stages in life where we run with energy, and others where we can only walk slowly. The truly important thing is this: whether we are running or just taking one step at a time, we must trust our good God. In Him, we find the new strength we need to run, to walk, and, ultimately, to fly above the difficulties that threaten to overwhelm us.
Thanks for reading this part of my story. My name is Mónica Sérpez, and I live in Córdoba, Argentina. I'm 67, and have been married to Henning Baker for 43 years. God has blessed us with four children, a granddaughter, and… another baby on the way.
